With a Saturn House Transit
Are you ready for more commitment?

When you experience a Saturn house transit one of your houses in your Astrology Chart may start to take on some of the following traits: Commitment, responsiblity, restriction, hard work, anchoring, erecting boundaries and basically require more effort than usually is the case.
Some of the areas that are likely to be a focus as Saturn moves through these houses are listed below:
Saturn 1st houseCrossing AscendantVery Important – Any planet crossing ascendantWith a Saturn house transit in your first house you are likely to attract more responsibility and accomplish a great deal. You may even find yourself withdrawing from others and need to make sure it is not just because you are afraid of long term commitment. This is not a good time to take risks with gambling. Things that you produce during this transit will be through sheer hard work. You will have a more disciplined approach to your creative outlets. In the long run the planning will be beneficial and will allow you to be more efficient and achieve whatever needs to be completed. Stay focused, do not scatter and waste your energy. You also need to take particular care with your health. Develop good eating habits and get plenty of exercise and rest. Treat your body well, good time to invest in a personal trainer see a naturopath and get more serious with your fitness and health. You need to be in tip top condition to perform in the outer world effectively.
Saturn Transiting the Seventh House
With a Saturn house transit in the seventh house close relationships will be your primary focus. Some of your relationships may bring more responsibility and may require a greater effort from you. It is also possible that some relationships will end as you feel they are demanding more from you than they are worth. However any relationship that is worthwhile is likely to be strengthened and will be stronger especially after this transit is over.
The past fourteen years have been more about getting to know yourself but you now enter a more social phase. This transit asks you to see if you can live up to the expectations of others as well as yourself. If you are single you may start to feel the need to begin dating and connect with people on a more serious level. You may decide to marry during this transit as you want more commitment from your relationship. Your partner may be more mature or older (can also be the other way around) or you may be attracted to a Capricorn or hard working partner.
Saturn Transiting the Eighth House
With Saturn transiting your eighth house finances and possessions you share with others will be more significant. Other peoples values need to be considered and you will need to learn to live with their values as well as your own. Care should be taken with any joint ventures and you should try to limit debt. The eighth house is also about major transformation. Mortality, death, taxes, wills and inheritances are some of the areas that may require your attention during this transit.
Saturn Transiting the Ninth House
With a Saturn house transit in the ninth house your views about life start to become more stable. Learning will be important to you now and you may decide to go to university and commit to studying. Perhaps you will think about travelling or take a long journey. If you do decide to travel you will want to learn and explore different cultures. Subjects relating to higher consciousness, religion, philosophy and law are all possible areas that you begin to focus on during this transit. Practical results are important as you want to gain a clearer understanding of your own world.
Saturn Transiting the Tenth House
A Saturn house transit in the tenth house is a very important transit. It is time to get clear and be more realistic about where you want to go in life. Try not to become so focused on your career or social status that you neglect your personal life. This is a good time to ensure you have a realistic plan.
You career will demand more responsibility from you now and if you are not happy in your chosen career you may need to ask yourself what are you going to do about it? You may have to redefine your professional or public identity. If necessary, set up boundaries with your boss, work colleagues or clients.
Saturn Transiting the Eleventh House
With a Saturn house transit in the eleventh house groups, friends, clubs, committees will be some of the areas where the spot light will be shining on you now. You are likely to take on more responsibility in any groups you belong to and others may be more demanding than at other times. Your hopes and wishes have the potential to be fulfilled or more defined especially if you are willing to put the energy into achieving your goals.
Saturn Transiting the Twelfth House
With Saturn transiting the twelfth house it is time to finally complete any ongoing projects. You may need to retreat at times during this transit so you can gain more insight. Ideal time to start a journal, write down your dreams or perhaps get some counseling are all ways that can potentially help you get in touch with your own self development. This is the time to observe and not start new projects. It is possible that you will have less energy during this transit so use this time to clear the decks. This is an ending cycle let go and complete things in this cycle and de-clutter your life to make room for new things to start in the next cycle.

Saturn through the Houses by Bob Marks
Saturn transits have been feared for centuries. The superficial reading is that they bring all sorts of calamities. In fact, they bring dissatisfaction and a desire for change. Ages ago, however, who could change? People were bound to the same routine year after year. When necessary changes aren’t made, Saturn transits tend to force them. This, to ancient peoples, was regarded as disaster.
What Saturn transits really do is bring things to a conclusion. One cycle ends and another begins. And yes, these transits are associated with “Murphy’s Law”, if something can go wrong, it will. Suppose you are burning your candle at both ends.
Saturn comes around and you get sick. Bad luck? No, just the results of the bad actions that you chose. Saturn transits simply tend to bring us the results of our actions, for better or worse. But if you have dotted all the i’s and crossed all the T’s, and took care of everything, Saturn transits can also bring rewards. If you have no loose ends in your life, Saturn will have nothing to chop off. Astrologer Noel Tyl, for instance, mentions a case of someone he knew who got a scholarship to study music in Europe when Saturn was making an opposition aspect to his Sun.
He had to work long and hard to get it, and he would have to continue to work because the grant was dependent on his grades. A gift of money from Saturn, but there are always strings attached: hard work, effort, and discipline.
The best way to handle Saturn transits is to look way ahead and see when they are coming. Will Saturn be going through your 2nd House (money) next year? Better start saving right now to make sure that you have reserve cash. Perhaps Saturn is headed for your 6th House (work). This could mean extra demands on the job. It could even mean no job.
Update your resume, just in case.  Yes, Saturn periods can be hard, but if you handle them right, the rewards you get are solid and long-lasting.
Saturn Transits Through Your First House: This transit starts with Saturn passing over your Ascendant, and it marks the start of a new cycle in your life. During the next 14 years, or so, you have to concentrate more on taking care of internal matters rather than focusing on what’s going on out there with everyone else. The 1st House is You, your personality and how you approach things. When Saturn moves here, you have a chance to figure out not just who you are, but who you want to be. If you get depressed during this transit, it is most likely an indication that some of the basic routines of your life are faulty and need to be changed.
Saturn Transits Through Your Second House: Watch your money and possessions. Income is more likely to dip during this transit. Or, expenses increase. Either way, you will have less. But there is another possibility. Your desires increase, so even if you have enough, it suddenly seems like you don’t. Saturn rules Capricorn, the sign of ambition, and, when Saturn comes around, it is frequently the time to take the next step up. Even if you are rich, you will feel this effect. After all, the 2nd House rules more than money and possessions. It shows the Value you place on things. When Saturn transits here, you may find that those material possessions you worked so hard for don’t give you a thrill any more. Ok, you got them. What do you do now? This could be the time to search for new goals and values.  Any way you look at it, when Saturn comes around you’ve got to do some extra work.
Saturn Transits Through Your Third House: can mean extra difficulties and problems through siblings and neighbors. If there are any old problems that have been simmering for years, they will tend to come to a head at this time. This could happen in several ways. Maybe they need you to help. Or you could need their help, and, for whatever reason, they can’t provide it. Or they put you through hell for asking. This is also the house of communication. You speech will tend to become more serious when Saturn transits your 3rd House. So will your thoughts. Take care, though, of that negative side of Saturn, depression. It helps if you concentrate on positive steps to take. This is a good time to learn a new skill, something that will be useful or practical. As always with a Saturn transit, look ahead and see what is coming. Then try to take preventive measures before it hits.
Saturn Transits Through Your Fourth House: Like all Saturn transits, not always a bad thing. This transit tends to bring changes in the home. One person I know finally moved out of his parents house at age 31 when Saturn hit his 4th House. The place he moved into was very small, but it was all his, and both he and his therapist were pleased. Saturn crossing over the bottom of your horoscope can also start your life in a new direction, usually upward. According to Grant Lewi, this is the best time to begin a rise in life, to start a long climb that will reach a peak in about 14 years. Yes, that is the tendency, but remember that there are other planets up there that can either reinforce this or interfere with it. Never make a forecast based on the transits of one planet alone. Most astrologers have had bad experiences trying to do that. The 4th House also rules one parent, usually the father. If there are any problems with this parent, particularly problems that have been swept under the rug, they will tend to surface during this transit. This is the transit that can make you suddenly remember how angry you were that they didn’t give you a tricycle for your 3rd birthday. When Saturn is exactly at the bottom of your horoscope, it will be making an opposition aspect to the top, the Mid-Heaven. During that time, your career, “public image”, and relationship with “the boss” will be affected as well. For the details, see the section on Saturn Transits in Aspect to Your Mid-Heaven.
Saturn Transits Through Your Fifth House: This is the house of love, romance, creativity, and children. No, it does not mean that your are going to be celibate for the next two years (well, not always). In fact, during this transit, it is possible to have a really deep, significant love affair. But you are less likely to have light, breezy affairs and one night stands. Saturn transits tend to coincide with things that are deep and serious. Frequently, you reach a turning point in relationships. Get married or break up. Saturn transits are not good for leaving things up in the air. Of course you have to take this in context. Saturn going through the 5th House of a child will not cause trouble with love affairs (at least, I hope not). But it could mean trouble with fun and games. They could be more likely to loose a favorite toy, for instance. You never can tell, however. I had a client once who wanted me to look at the chart of his 5 year old daughter. She had Jupiter and Mars transits to her 5th House that summer (these tend to be more fun than Saturn transits). I told him that this was a shame because they tended to love affairs and that it was a waste to have these transits hit at that age. We laughed about it. At the end of the summer, he called me to say that his daughter had fallen in love with a 12 year old boy and she was writing him love letters. At least with Jupiter and Mars she was cheerful about it. Saturn would be more likely to bring depression. In the areas of creativity, sports, and games, Saturn transits will either coincide with times when you have to give up an activity in these areas (you’re 95 years old; time to give up professional football) or an increase in ambition and discipline. Serious about jogging or doing creative work? Put yourself on a schedule and practice, practice, practice. Time for ambition and discipline. If you have young children --- well, there are always problems, aren’t there? There just seem to be more of them when Saturn transits your 5th House. The kids are grown? There are still problems now. Maybe they want to move back. Maybe they move far away and you miss them. Saturn always means some sort of challenge and an obstacle to be overcome.
Saturn Transits Through Your Sixth House: This is the house of work and health. No, it will not make you loose your job and get sick. Well, not usually. Remember that Saturn transits bring problems to the surface. This should be viewed as an opportunity to solve them. Maybe your day job will seem more of a drag than usual now. Perhaps it’s not right for you any more and it’s time to move on. Update your resume and start searching. If you’re self employed, a Saturn transit through your 6th House means that you may be reaching a make-or-break point. Either your business is going to make it in the next 2 years or so, or you will have to close up shop and work for someone else. If you are an employer, you will probably have more concerns about your employees when Saturn hits. There is more likely to be trouble with them at this time. Either they quit or die or retire, or they just aren’t working as hard as they used to. The first thing to do is check how you’re treating them. It just might be that you are at fault here. Saturn means that the same old way of doing business isn’t going to cut it any more. As far as health is concerned, I am not a doctor and medical astrology is not my specialty. Still, it’s seldom a bad idea to get an extra check-up or two during the years that Saturn transits your 6th House. Saturn rules everything that takes a long time to develop. A check-up can help to catch developing ailments before they become severe.
Saturn Transits Through Your Seventh House: This is the house of marriage and partnership. While Saturn passes through here, is can also be the house of divorce. But only if the relationship is on the rocks to begin with. Saturn transits tend to bring things to a head.  I once had a client who had a husband and a boyfriend. Saturn was going to enter her 7th House in a couple of months, so I told her that she would have to make a decision. She said “I don’t want to make a decision. I like things just the way they are.” Within two weeks after Saturn hit, she lost both of them. She suddenly decided she couldn’t stand her husband any more and walked out, only to have her boyfriend tell her that she waited too long and he had found someone else. Never, Never put decisions off during a Saturn transit. Do not just let things happen. That would be like telling Saturn to make the decisions for you. You may not like the result.  On the positive side, Saturn entering your 7th House means that it is starting to transit the top half of your horoscope. That’s when you begin to get  rewards for your work of the previous seven to fourteen years. Unless some other transit or progression interferes, this is the start of  a new phase of your life. You will tend to be more concerned with career and “external” matters, less concerned with purely personal and “internal” things. Ironically, you may be facing more opposition at this time. Remember, the 7th House rules open enemies as well as marriage and partnership. It rules any relationship where you approach the other person as an equal. Saturn transiting the 7th House makes you suddenly noticeable and the success that this transit tends to bring attracts jealousy. Be prepared to guard your rear. One reason marriages are under greater stress when Saturn goes through this house is that the partner becomes envious of your success. You may have to make an extra effort to soothe their ego. Or, if you think that it’s disgusting for them to be so petty, dump them.
Saturn Transits Through Your Eighth House: Less sex and more taxes. Well, not necessarily. Sex may simply become more important to you. If you previously did a lot of one night stands, they may seem empty now. You are more likely to want something deeper. However, if there are any sexual dysfunctions, they will tend to flare up during this Saturn transit, and you will be forced to deal with them. Remember that Saturn doesn’t cause trouble. All it does is bring it to the surface. Saturn going through your 8th House doesn’t have to indicate anything world shaking. It could be that you suddenly feel the need for more control in sex and you start reading books on the subject. Ok. But please note, you can’t learn everything from books. If you inherit any money or possessions at this time, there will tend to be extra difficulties. Maybe someone disputes the will and there is a legal battle. Or the property you inherit is difficult to deal with in some way. For instance, it may be a house that you can’t sell easily and the taxes are coming due. The 8th House rules other people’s money in general. If you need a line of credit, it could be more difficult to get it at this time. Don’t wait for Saturn to hit you before taking action. Look ahead. See where it is going to be. Then make plans long before it gets there. Saturn transiting your 2nd House can affect your money. Saturn moving through your 8th House can affect partner’s money. Your partner’s income may drop and that can still affect you. As  always with Saturn, make plans before it hits you.
Saturn Transits Through Your Ninth House: Not the best time to take a long distance pleasure trip. But it can be good for business travel. If you must take a vacation during this time, take a short trip instead. Or, if you insist on taking a long distance vacation, bring some work along with you to make Saturn happy. This is also the house of higher education. Saturn is the planet of ambition and dissatisfaction. This could manifest in many different ways. You could feel blocked in your career because you didn’t get the proper education earlier. You then have a choice. Do nothing and be depressed, or start studying. The 9th House comes before the 10th House (career) so what you do now can have a strong influence on your career and public standing in a couple of years. Take your time making your choices.
Saturn Transits Through Your Tenth House: Saturn transits give us the results of our past actions. The 10th House rules our career, public image and standing, the boss, and the goals of our life. Well, you will be able to tell if your life is on the right track. Any lingering problems with supervisors, or career matters in general, will tend to surface now. Any moves you should have made but didn’t, well, now is the time when you will probably say: “I should have.” Saturn passed over the top of Bill Gate’s horoscope when the justice department was readying the anti-trust suit against Microsoft. Chickens coming home to roost. Gates didn’t figure that he would be so good at competing that everyone else would band against him. His “Take no prisoners” attitude gave them little choice. On the positive side, if you planned your work and worked your plan, this is harvest time and Saturn will help you to reach a peak. However, you will still have to work hard to stay there! No time for rest. And be careful that you don’t devote All of your time to career. Other areas of your life could suffer, like family and friends. Make an effort to maintain some balance here.
Saturn Transits Through Your Eleventh House: Saturn transits can get rid of things we think we need but really don’t. Friends, who really aren’t friends, will tend to show their true colors now. Let them go. Good friends can also go out of your life at this time. Saturn rules the end of cycles. As far as the friends who remain, you may be too busy to spend much time with them. Or they may be too busy. On the other hand, they may have extra problems and ask for your help. The same is true for your hopes and wishes. Some of those may be obsolete and need to be changed. The 11th House also shows how we deal with Groups of people. If you belong to a team at work, or some sort of club or organization, Saturn could bring out problems, difficulties, or extra responsibilities. Maybe the group changes and it’s not fun any more. You can also get a promotion at work or get elected to an office in a club. This means more work and responsibility. Saturn benefits are frequently bittersweet.
Saturn Transits Through Your Twelfth House: Watch out for extremely negative people coming into your life now. Usually, they will come to you for “help”. Only the help they need never seems to end. They can drain you. It doesn’t have to be a new person either. It could be someone you already know who suddenly “turns”.  Saturn transiting here frequently marks the end of a long cycle. The two years, or so, that Saturn spends moving through your 12th House is a good time to finish things off. It is not good, however, for starting new, long-range projects. For those, wait until Saturn crosses your Ascendant and enters your 1st House. You can make plans now, but it is not a good time to put them into action. Even if you try to, circumstances will usually cause delays until Saturn reaches your 1st House. Right now, you should be cutting your losses and clearing the decks for action.

Saturn Transiting the Houses of the Horoscope

Techniques for Preparing for the Future and Understanding the Past

Saturn takes about 28-29 years to come full circle. We can expect Saturn to spend some time in each of our 12 houses. Unless you work with an equal house system, however, the length of Saturn's transit through a house will depend on how big each house is. Saturn will spend approximately 2-1/2 years in an "average"-size house of 30 degrees.
Note that Saturn's effect is to crystallize, to ground, and to solidify. Generally, the effect of Saturn transiting a house is felt in a more pronounced way in the first part of its transit through the house, as well as when it forms aspects to natal planets. Toward the end of the house, the native tends to have gained increased understanding—experience, if you will—with the effects. Saturn's movement by transit through the houses acts to aid us to learn to depend on ourselves in different areas of life. At first, we generally encounter feelings of being thwarted or unsupported by the outside world in the particular areas of life that are ruled by the house. By the end of the house transit, we will have learned to look within ourselves for support.
In general, as Saturn passes through the fire houses (the first, fifth, and ninth), we deal with self-confidence issues and how these issues have affected our lives and our productivity. Through the earth houses (the second, sixth, and tenth), we confront issues of self-worth and effectiveness. Through the air houses (the third, seventh, and eleventh), we evaluate our relationships with others and how much (or how little) we can depend on these, as well as our mental outlook. Through the water houses (the fourth, eighth, and twelfth), we re-evaluate our inner stores of faith, our connection with the past, and our psychological workings.
Saturn makes us accountable for ourselves wherever it touches. Each house governs specific areas of our lives, and of our personalities, and transits of Saturn will bring these areas up for "inspection", re-organization, and restructure.
Saturn Transiting the First House

Saturn transiting the first house begins with a Saturn conjunction to the Ascendant, a transit of personal significance. The first house is a fire house, a house that rules our personal identity. We concern ourselves with how we come across to others on a personal level with Saturn here. Our physical body becomes a focus as well. Depending on the age of the native, it may be a time when we feel our age, or it is a time when we see our bodies quite clearly. This is an excellent time for beginning health regimens, diets, and the like, simply because it is a time when we look in the mirror and see ourselves clearly—not what we want to see. Our outlook on life changes to a more serious, responsible tone. In the beginning stages of the transit, you may feel frustrated with yourself, let down, and lacking in self-confidence. You might reach out to others in an attempt to validate yourself, looking for ways to boost your confidence. When these attempts fail, you may feel temporarily let down and discouraged. Rest assured that Saturn will re-work these feelings, with your help of course, until you reach a point (as Saturn moves through the house) where you have a stronger sense of self. This transit acts to transform your self-confidence in such a way that you question the source of your confidence to date, and discover a more solid base for pulling up innerstrength. Saturn here acts to rip away the superficial. Illusions about the self, the body, and personal abilities will no longer be tolerated. The end result is a newfound identity and a realistic understanding of the self. In terms of career and projects, outward signs of progress may not be as forthcoming, yet the work that you do during this transit will lay a foundation for future success and progress! For example, some years ago, a client began a hobby/project during a Saturn transit to her first house, something that took up a lot of her time and energy and that yielded nothing in terms of immediate financial gain—until later! In fact, this "hobby" turned into her career in the years to follow.

Saturn Transiting the Second House

While a certain level of introspection marked the Saturn transit of the first house, Saturn's movement into the second house marks a new stage of taking stock of our effectiveness, self-worth, and finances. This stage of life is often marked by hard work. It is a practical time in one's life. Financial success may not be remarkable, yet it is generally steady, if slow to come by. This transit has traditionally been associated with financial loss, but in truth, it is more about our perceptions—we are apt to review how effective we have been on a financial level to date, and find some dissatisfaction with our progress. In fact, gains may be slow, but sudden reversals are not common with this transit. The purpose of this transit is for you to make the connection between your own feelings of self-worth and what you produce in the real world/get back from the real world. As with all Saturn transits, at the outset, we might reach out and look for validation from the outside world and from others, and find something lacking in so doing. The initial sense of feeling unsupported can be discouraging (many of us think on the lines of: "I work so hard, and what do I get for all this hard work?"), but as the transit moves forward, you learn to look inside of yourself with a newfound clarity and realism and ideally draw up considerable strength from within. You work on your effectiveness in the world, and see exactly what has been holding you back from achieving the results you want. The challenge here is to capture the newly found and defined self-confidence you gained from the first house transit, and now apply it in the real world.

Saturn Transiting the Third House

This transit marks a time when how you have networked with people around you, and how you gain and disseminate information, come up for inspection by Saturn. A new kind of pressure is produced—it's not about your personality or your resources like it was in the first and second houses. Rather, the pressure centers more around mental output. You may feel pressure to produce ideas, and to make them work. A certain somberness in your outlook may be characteristic of this phase, as it may be a time of worry. It may seem like acquaintances and sometimes siblings are blocking your growth in some manner, and these relationships may be strained as a result. Although you have a desire to make contacts, you are now rather preoccupied with learning, and you may view idle chit-chat as a waste of time. You may feel an unusual pressure to structure your time and effort, and to cut out communication that seems unnecessary. You may at times feel rather overwhelmed by such things as errands, red tape, and other such day-to-day "disruptions". As Saturn moves closer to your IC (the fourth house cusp), there may be some vague feeling of urgency and worry, as if you sense some things in your life are closing. By the end of the transit, however, you will have ideally gained a greater depth of understanding, having focused on information and communication that you really can use to feel more effective in the world.

Saturn Transiting the Fourth House

This marks a time of considerable inner "re-working". In terms of outward signs of achievement, this transit may be the most unremarkable of all the Saturn transits. However, near the end of the transit, and certainly later than that, you will recognize this stage as a critical one in which you made some life-changing personal and psychological advances and developments. During this stage, you are working on solidifying your identity, exploring your roots (where you came from), so that when Saturn begins its transit through the fifth house, you will be ready to differentiate yourself from others and embark on some important work on your ego. For now, however, you will face issues surrounding your attachments to the past. Sometimes this manifests as literal re-organization of your home. Moving house is not associated with this transit as it would if, for example, Uranus was the transiting planet. If moves are made, you might encounter some resistance in yourself. This is not a time when you feel particularly brave in the outer world. However, reorganization in your home, and more importantly, in your soul, embodies the true nature of this transit. Many will go through a major "spring cleaning" inside. Limitations that came from early family conditioning will be brought to the fore. At first, there may be some frustration with your life to date, and how you have limited your opportunities because of early conditioning. A feeling of being alone and unsupported in life may dominate the early stages of this transit. Sometimes, delays and slowdowns are experienced in the areas of health, mobility, and career. As Saturn moves closer to the fifth house, a feeling of some kind of mastery will empower you.

Saturn Transiting the Fifth House

With Saturn moving through the house of creative power, you may feel limited initially by a lack of internal "spark" or "spunk". How you entertain yourself, how you have fun, and issues surrounding how you manage your ego are now coming up for "inspection". By the end of the transit, ideally you will have a stronger sense of purpose, and a re-worked ego. What makes you unique? How do you handle pride? What are your creative talents? Have you worked hard enough to feel good about "playing hard"? These are issues you will face during the course of this transit. By the time Saturn enters the sixth house, you should have a solid sense of what makes you different than others, and a rather concrete belief in your own creative talents. Many people go through a period of re-evaluation of their talents—how they have perhaps wasted them to date, and how they can express themselves in a more practical, useful manner. The fifth house is also associated with love and attention received from others. Issues you will face during this time include how "deserving" you are of special attention from others. Initially, you may feel unloved, and perhaps somewhat neglected or ignored. As you learn the lessons of this transit, you should learn to love yourself and take pride in yourself. Looking outside of yourself for "ego strokes" (whether through romance or other such "applause") may prove to be fruitless. You will learn through the course of this transit to depend on yourself and to take pride in yourself for what you really are, not only how others see you.

Saturn Transiting the Sixth House

Saturn turns his critical eye on matters of the sixth house, and you are likely to feel a certain level of pressure in the areas of work, daily functions, habits, and health. At the beginning of the transit, you might find yourself more accountable than ever when it comes to your work. You may initially feel bogged down by what seems like undue pressure in your routines. The key word here is "seems", simply because the nature of Saturn is such that the pressure it brings is never truly undue. In fact, Saturn knows better than us, and it is in reality very much "due". Why? Because things we may have previously neglected or disregarded now come up for inspection. How can we make best use of our time? How can we manage our day-to-day lives, and our bodies, better? Saturn pressures here make us aware of all of the "fluff" we have surrounding our daily routines and our work, and spring cleaning is now in order. This is an excellent time for starting new regimens to better our health and well-being, such as regular exercise, more structured and productive use of our time, and so forth. In fact, we might be faced with life events that force us to do so, or at least provide us with the motivation to get our acts together. Traditionally, this transit was associated with health problems. Generally, though, if health concerns manifest, they are ones that are manageable. They signal the need for change in diet, routines, and habits. By the end of the transit, you will likely have learned to be more productive, healthier, and considerably more focused.

Saturn Transiting the Seventh House

Significant relationships with others are the focus when Saturn transits the seventh house. Saturn motivates us to do "spring cleaning" in the areas of life he touches, and one-to-one relationships will need to be considered and understood during this transit. Initially, as is usually the case with Saturn transits, we might feel frustrated and we might seem withdrawn. This is a time when we need to define, understand, and crystallize our significant relationships with others. If you already have a partner, this is a time when any issues surrounding compromise, flexibility, and the ability to give your heart to your partner will surface. Initial frustration can take the form of feeling criticized and "examined" in this area of life. By the end of the transit, however, you will have learned much about commitment and compromise. Single natives will feel the initial pressures of Saturn transiting the seventh house as well. A feeling of loneliness is possible in either situation (whether you have a significant partnership or not), but instead of an issue of re-committing, the single native will think about commitment in general. If involved in a casual love relationship, when Saturn transits the seventh, a pressure emerges concerning the need for evaluating one's commitments. Often this transit corresponds with an urge (or pressure) to make a commitment or a re-commitment. Healthy partnerships can be the outcome of this partnership, whether they are new ones or strengthened existing partnerships. Saturn always brings with him a fair measure of reality and objectivity, so that whatever relationships the native has or wants will be defined and re-defined. Relationships are seen now as serious. Partners are no longer simply fun or mirrors of our ego. Responsibilities to partners, the need to compromise, and the realities of the needs of others, become clear. We are forced to begin seeing others as individuals, and to improve the manner in which we relate to and with others. Depending on the person's age and life circumstances, "significant partnerships" can mean partnerships with loved ones, business partnerships, and even deep friendships. For example, when Saturn transited my seventh house when I was a young teenager, I began to view my casual friendships as superficial and unsatisfying and eventually developed a deep friendship with a girl that was to last some time. Essentially, quantity (in the relationship department) was replaced with quality, and this process involved time, soul-searching, frustration, and eventual fulfillment.

Saturn Transiting the Eighth House

How do you handle power? Your desire nature? Intimate relationships? What kind of obsessions and addictions do you have? What are your deep-rooted compulsions? What are your unhealthy attachments? When Saturn transits our eighth house, we feel pressure to answer these questions. Often, at the beginning of the transit, we are very sensitive to what seems like outer world pressures that force us to examine some of our deepest desires and attachments. These include our sexual relationships, our finances (especially with regards to debts and shared finances), and our need for control. Sometimes, Saturn transiting the eighth brings about sexual dysfunctions, whether we encounter these in ourselves or in our partners. We may face difficulties satisfying our libido and/or encounter problems with intimacy. These pressures are "designed" to make us more aware of our desire nature, and what exactly it is we want. Dissatisfaction and frustrations getting what we want, especially with reference to relationships with others and with our resources, often characterize the first part of the transit. How have we been using power? During this transit, we may find that previous methods of controlling our environment and the people in our lives simply are not effective any more. We may not even be aware just how we have been employing power and control to date. Another realm over which the eighth house reigns is our mortality. With Saturn here, we become much more aware of our mortality. Just as Saturn transits to our Sun or Ascendant make us more conscious of our age, Saturn transiting the eighth house often brings with it a realization that we do not live forever. Of course, we know this as a fact at the back of our minds, but Saturn reminds us. Before this transit, it is generally wise to begin organizing one's finances. If we don't, Saturn will most likely find ways to force us to do just that. On a psychological level, we face some of our fears that are of a compulsive nature—those fears that lead us to believe weneed certain things in order to survive. Take a small example of a superstition. Perhaps we perform some kind of small ritual that we feel will help protect us or give us good luck. If we do it often enough, it becomes an addiction. We are afraid that if we don't do this little ritual, we will set ourselves up for bad luck. If we get rid of this superstition, we feel strong. Something as simple as a superstition or ritual for good luck can undermine us. Why? Because we are giving away our power over ourselves to this compulsive behavior! We are denying that we have power over our own lives. The same is true of any form of compulsive behavior and addiction. We attempt to control our lives through these behaviors, but what we are really doing is letting the addictions control us. Towards the end of the transit, we will have eliminated some deep-seated habits and attachments that have been keeping us back from feeling emotionally free. We emerge healthier and stronger. When we give in to compulsive behaviors, we give up self-control, and guilt undermines our lives. We are not ourselves. By attempting to control others, we give away our own power over ourselves. By the end of this transit, we will feel more emotionally healthy. We will have nixed some of our addictions, and mastered our superstitions. We will feel more powerful because we have given up attempting to control things we cannot or should not control, and we will have gained a feeling of self-mastery instead.

Saturn Transiting the Ninth House

This period in our lives is generally dedicated to self-improvement. We are developing our ideals and our commitments as transiting Saturn makes its way through our ninth house. Ideals and spiritual goals that we may have taken for granted or worked with for many years suddenly seem superficial or not particularly useful to us. If we have been studying, we must watch for a period of questioning exactly what we are working towards. Does this line of study match our true selves? Some of us begin new studies as we unconsciously prepare ourselves for Saturn's next house transit. But most of us come face to face with our self-defeating attitudes during this period of time. The ninth house is a fire house, and it has much to do with our outlook, our sense of adventure, and our confidence. It also is associated with our faith, hope, and vision. Although its attachment to such things as higher learning and travel might mean that a Saturn transit to this house will affect these things, but for most of us, it is more about taking a closer look at, and re-assessing, our attitude and confidence. At the beginning of the transit, we may feel a little somber. The blind faith or optimism that may have carried us to date comes up for inspection. Are our belief systems sound? What do we stand for? What kind of future are we working towards, and why? The spirit that drives us and motivates us to move out and beyond the everyday grind comes up for inspection. By the end of the transit, we will have re-worked our spirit, and come face to face with what it is that offers us hope and optimism as well as that which fuels our drive. The initial entrance of Saturn into our ninth house may cause us to question ourselves, but by the end of the transit, if we work hard at self-improvement, we will have replaced our old spirit with a re-generated one. We will be one step closer to knowing where we are headed, and we will have re-built faith in ourselves. A shaky feeling that causes us to sputter and avoid risks will be replaced with a more mature attitude towards adventure and facing the unknown. We let go of self-defeating attitudes that have been holding us back, we recognize exactly where we have been overdoing our expectations, and we find new ways to nurture faith, hope, and vision.

Saturn Transiting the Tenth House

Saturn reaches the top of our chart when it begins its transit through the tenth house. Ironically enough, there is freedom in knowing some of our limitations, and Saturn's transit through the tenth house teaches us exactly what this means. By the time Saturn leaves the house, we will have learned where we stand in the world, and how we have limited our achievements. This self-evaluation then offers us the freedom to appraise where we want to go. Approximately 14 years before this transit, we learned Saturnine lessons of the fourth house—we built a secure foundation within ourselves. Now it is time we build a secure foundation in our professional and/or most public lives. Our standing in society now comes under Saturn's scrutiny. We are in the spotlight, and what it is exactly that we have been building now comes up for inspection. Any projects begun 12-14 years before this transit are now scrutinized. Some of us find ourselves getting recognition and career "rewards" at this time. If this transit occurs in early adulthood, it is a time when we face our duties as a career person. Although the tenth house is a house of ambition, we do not focus on where we are going as much as we focus on where we stand. The question, "Where are we going?", is reserved for the next house, the eleventh, although on some level we are preparing for that stage as well. Before we know where exactly we are headed, we must know where we stand. Saturn's transit of the tenth house is an eye-opening one—a time when we are working hard, taking on our fair share of duties and responsibilities, and either reaping some of the rewards of our hard work or facing the consequences of poor choices. We become aware of what we have and haven't accomplished to date, and we unconsciously prepare to re-evaluate our lives in terms of our personal goals during the next house transit. What have we achieved to date? We now are treated to a realistic look at what we have built and what we have achieved. We no longer view our place in the world, our careers, our reputations, and our standing in society with rose-colored glasses. We face the facts, and only the facts. At the beginning of the transit, our increased sensitivity to where we stand and to our reputations may feel uncomfortable for some. We may feel exposed, publicly scrutinized, or under fire in our careers. We may also feel burdened by our responsibilities. This discomfort comes only as a result of a rush of reality into the matters of the tenth house, and if the discomfort is great, it is only due to the fact that we may have been holding onto false images of ourselves. Just as a mid-life crisis is experienced differently by different people, Saturn's transit of the tenth house holds different meaning for different people, depending very much on how true we have been to ourselves. However, as Saturn moves through the house, we begin to feel more secure. We recognize what it is exactly that we have accomplished.

Saturn Transiting the Eleventh House

We've spent at least a couple of years focusing much of our energy on our place in society, our responsibilities, and our standing while Saturn transited the tenth house. We should be at a point where we know, realistically, what we are doing. When Saturn transits the eleventh house, events or realizations cause us to ask ourselves where it is that we are going. Our personal goals come under Saturn's scrutiny as he makes his way through our eleventh house. How we fit in with others, our affiliations with people and groups, and our peers all become serious matters in our eyes. We might feel that our personal "circle" or our networks are superficial or unsatisfying at the beginning of the transit. We might feel alienated as we begin to see them for what they are worth, or what they aren't worth. We might feel some disdain for the superficial workings of casual friendships, begin to feel uncomfortable and self-conscious about "going through the motions", doing and saying the right things, and so forth. Alternatively, we might meet someone with whom we establish a serious friendship at this time, or we might become a member of a group or affiliation that we devote much of our time to. Weeding out what seems now to be superfluous social associations from our lives is very likely at this time as we become more serious about what we want, on a personal level, from our lives. We take a hard look at the role we play in others' lives, and consider exactly what it is that satisfies us and contributes to our happiness, beyond marriage, romance, career, religion, and so forth. As Saturn moves further through the house, and by the time the transit is over, we should have found ways to bring definition and articulation to our innermost wishes and hopes for our personal path.

Saturn Transiting the Twelfth House

Contemplation of the meaning of our existence, our accomplishments, and our "failures" is the main focus when Saturn transits our twelfth house. This transit marks the end of a cycle, which can most certainly bring with it a fair measure of confusion and discontent, especially at the beginning of the period. Saturn turns a critical eye to all that lies beneath the surface, and we are forced to do some serious "spring cleaning" of our psyches. During this transit, we face our own demonsthe vague yet haunting fears that undermine us. We all have skeletons in our closet. What we don't always realize is that they can seriously undermine our happiness and well-being. Saturn sweeps through our "closet" (the twelfth house) and demands that we take a hard look at what's been hiding in there. Is this process uncomfortable? For most of us, it can be. But getting rid of outdated attachments, and examining and discarding irrational fears, is not only necessary for further growth and developmentit's ultimately a huge relief. The twelfth house in some ways is a dumping ground for things we have left "undone". Saturn here wants us to sort through the junk and keep only those things that we truly need for future development. This process can be rather lengthy and it can feel very slow, but if done properly, it can be most rewarding. We deal with endings rather than new beginnings during this transit, as we shed outdated attachments and unconsciously prepare ourselves for Saturn's transit of the first house, when we will work diligently on our individuality and personal identity. We are markedly introspective at this time in our lives. We may isolate ourselves from others in some mannera process that tends to come naturally. Health issues, generally of a psychosomatic nature, may come to the fore. We may be attracted to alternate ways of living, and to self-study fields, such as psychoanalysis.

Keys to Handling Saturn Transits:

Saturn teaches us about the value of moderation and caution. Perhaps the best way to "handle" hard Saturn transits to the houses of your chart is to avoid fighting these lessons. Accept that, at this time in your life, things may move at a slower speed (even a snail's pace). Saturn wants us to work hard, put our energies into practical, useful, and meaningful projects, and to live in the "here and now". This period in your life is a time for building a solid foundation. Understand that moderation at this point in your life is necessary for your spiritual growth and your physical body as well. Avoid blaming others for where you are at now for extended periods of time (some self-pity, however, may be necessary in order to gather strength and the ability to depend on yourself, however)—doing this will only lead to feelings of melancholy and anger. Know that this period in your life, while temporary, is a time for learning about your personal limits as well as your inner strength. Carry these lessons as you move beyond this phase, because how you handle your life now will make all the difference as Saturn moves into the successive house in your chart.

Saturn Through The Houses

by

Dee Patterson

Saturn transits can have profound effects on your life. Known as the teacher, when Saturn transits a house, you can expect matters of that house to come to the forefront for the next two and half years. Anyone interested in Astrology should always look at what Saturn is doing in your natal chart by transits. That is the area where you will experience lessons, both good and bad.

Saturn transiting the first house - During this time, you become more reserved and conservative in personal matters. This begins a new cycle in the life of the individual and letting go of the old can be painful. There is a focus more on the self and less on others in the person's life.
Things that have up till now been tolerated, will seem oppressive and that it can no longer be tolerated. If you have been ignoring your health, then health matters will become a focus through illness or desire to improve the health. If it's a relationship, you will find the things that do not work become more oppressive and can easily indicate a split as the person is now focused on their own needs, not that of others. If it's a job that no longer works, then the job may be taken away or the person may decide to make a change. Whatever has been causing the individual unhappiness, we be brought to the forefront for a resolution. This is also a time when more responsibilities and duties requiring hard work put on the individual. During this transit, you need to get in touch with who you really are and what will make you happy.

Saturn transiting the second house - An emphasis will be placed on finances and business responsibilities. What do you consider your true worth? Do you value yourself? These are the types of questions that get brought to the forefront when Saturn is in the second. You may have to work harder to get ahead, but you will also learn what you need to do to earn more money to buy the things you want. It is a time where you will come to understand what the "things" you desire have a price that must be paid. Are they worth it. This is time when you could lose money. If this happens, it is because on a deeper level it is necessary to separate you from what you have as a way of identifying your self. Caution should be used in financial affairs and long thought, research and patience should be utilized before moving forward. It is a time where you have earned through hard work any gains you make in finances.

Saturn transiting the third house - During the transit of this house, learning become more important. You may be forced by your work to learn new information to do your job. You may decide to take on a course of study to advance yourself. Communications become more important and it is a good time to write, teach or do scientific research. You ability to mentally focus and concentrate become enhanced as Saturn puts structure into your thought process. Matters that relate to siblings can be problematic during this transit. Disagreements can cause rifts in the family. Caution should be used in signing any contracts. There is also the possibility that you can become more negative in your thinking. There could be many misunderstanding in communications as you are forced to develop your style of communicating, whether in writing or speaking.

Saturn transiting the fourth house - An increase in domestic and family responsibilities take place during this transit. Home repairs or remodeling may take center stage during this transit. Problems in your domestic life will be in the forefront. You may begin to work from the home or if you have been a home based person, you may go out of the home to work. Often, the person changes homes during this period. Parents may force you to take on a large role in their lives. Because the fourth house is also the basis for the inner self, It is also a good time to work through childhood psychological issues. It's an excellent time for psychotherapy to ensure that the rest of your life is improved. You may also find yourself more involved with real estate, food or food services, farming and domestic products and services.

Saturn transiting the Fifth House - Matters involving children can come to the forefront during this transit. New children may be born, increasing responsibilities. Sometimes it indicates the loss of a child through miscarriage. You may become more involved in your children's school. Problems around children can become a focus. It is also a time of creativity or the desire to be more creative. If you have been trying to create something, Saturn will give the structure to get the idea into a solid form. You may also have a strong desire to teach others the things you have learned. Affairs began with this transit could take a long time to develop or have many restrictions. Perhaps children interfere in some way with the relationship. While Saturn is in the fifth, it is not a good time to gamble to do other speculative ventures as they are unlikely to work out.

Saturn transiting the Sixth House - Matters pertaining to the job take the forefront. This can be in increased responsibilities or problems that relate to the workplace. You could become unemployed or be forced to do work that you dislike. If the job was one that you didn't like, then you will be forced through circumstances to make a change, either physical or in attitude. You will pay attention to details in your work and seek organization to your work space. You become more productive. This is also a time when health problems can show up, especially if you have been ignoring the problem. It will become a crises demanding attention. You may change your diet and begin a physical fitness program. Pets and animals can become a problem through illness or loss, or you may acquire a pet. You might find yourself more concerned with the plight of animals.

Saturn transiting the Seventh House - Relationships become the focus, good or bad. If a relationship is not working, this is the time that it may end in separation or divorce. There may be more responsibility in relationships of all types. There can be challenges to relationships that result in a stronger bond. If you are not in a relationship, it can crystalize the desire to find a mate. It is time when you may also be involved in lawsuits. It's a time to learn about how you relate to others in a partnership way. During this period, if you have been learning your lessons and applying them to your everyday life, you will begin to reap the rewards of a better life as Saturn moves up to the midheaven.

Saturn transiting the Eighth House - This is a time when other peoples resources can affect you. Your mate could lose their job, or a parent become ill and you take on more responsibility where finances are concerned. The individual may be forced to handle the affairs of someone who have died. Problems or financial losses can occur through joint finances and business involvements. If you haven't been doing your taxes properly, this is time when they can become problematic. You might find difficulties in securing loans. You might also be given more responsibility in work with finances. It's a time when you may develop an increased interest in the occult and the afterlife or mysteries of the Universe.

Saturn transiting the Ninth House - Your beliefs and philosophy become crystalized. You may join a new church or religious organization. The desire for others to know what you believe come to the forefront, although this can make you unpopular. You might decide to go to college or take other courses of learning. You may travel more for business and less for pleasure and encounter problems with travel. You could also be involved in lawsuits or problems with the law. If you are trying to get published, you might find that there are many restrictions.

Saturn transiting the Tenth House - This is supposed to be the harvest of all the hard work that came while Saturn transited house 1-9. It really depends on whether you have been preparing during prior transits. It is a time for greater responsibilities in your career. Your status and prestige should increase during this time if you have done the previous work. You can be forced into leadership roles. There is an opportunity to make an impression upon the world as an individual. If you haven't done your work, this could be a trying time in terms of your status and career. There could be problems with authority figures or the loss of an authority figure, perhaps the father. Or greater responsibilities around parents. Decisions to change the career could emerge by the end of this transit.

Saturn transiting the Eleventh House - More responsibility can be assumed in organizations and groups. Friendships may change as you gain new awareness about what friendships mean. You could make new friends and re-connect with friends. This is a time to crystalize your hopes, dreams and wishes and you can bring them into concrete form.

Saturn transiting the Twelfth the House - This is a time where people often become more introverted and can lead to depression. There is a sense of needing to go within and it's not a good time to try new ventures. Difficulties will prevent their fruition. This is a time for evaluation, so that when Saturn goes into the First House, you have cleared those things from you life that no longer work. It is also a time when you could be associated with hospitals, or asylums or other institutions through work or by being incarcerated. Confinement marks this transits whether by choice in withdrawing from society or through illness or incarceration. It's a good time to be in therapy, to clear out the old baggage before moving into the first house.

SATURN TRANSITING YOUR 1ST HOUSE (approx. 2.5 years duration)
This is a period when you will need to develop your personal identity more strongly through self-reliance and constructive self- discipline. Initially you will have less time for public and social interactions as you need freedom from interference to better define your personality and independent purpose. At times you may be afflicted by low self-confidence, ill health, weight loss, and fatigue. You will tend to be serious about your personal environment, making sure that you are not exposed to harmful conditions. Gradually you will learn how to assert yourself better as an individual. You may study physical self-improvement methods and learn practical skills that will make you more competitive and productive. As you withdraw from public life over the next few years, your home and private life will begin to mean more to you.
SATURN TRANSITING YOUR 2ND HOUSE (approx. 2.5 years duration)
You have private goals to be realized now as your domestic life becomes more important to you. This will necessitate that you gain better control of your financial security and earning power during this period. Initially you will need to be more frugal and resourceful in your finances and develop a more practical sense of values. At times you may feel poor, shabby, and cheap as your financial resources dwindle. You may incur heavy business or professional expenses, losses, or bad credit. Worry will incline you to be serious about your finances. Through hard work and prudent organization you will gradually build up your savings and wealth.
SATURN TRANSITING YOUR 3RD HOUSE (approx. 2.5 years duration)
During this period you will achieve better mental discipline. You will gather useful information that will serve your personal goals, and you will improve your ability to express yourself with reason and sincerity.
